Phantom Blade Zero FAQ

Short answers to the questions people ask most, with sources.

When does Phantom Blade Zero unlock?

One global unlock on PS5, Steam and Epic: 29 October 2026 at 02:00 UTC — that is 28 October 7:00 PM Pacific / 10:00 PM Eastern, 29 October 2:00 AM in the UK, 3:00 AM in Central Europe (Budapest, Berlin, Paris), 10:00 AM in China and 11:00 AM in Japan. See the Release Time page for your own time zone.

Is the release date 28 or 29 October?

Both dates refer to the same moment. Steam shows 28 October because the unlock is 7 PM on the 28th in US Pacific time; PlayStation, Epic and the official site show 29 October because that moment is 02:00 UTC on the 29th. Nobody gets the game a day early.

When does pre-load start and how big is the download?

Pre-load opened on 27 October at 02:00 UTC on all three stores, 48 hours before unlock. The PC install is about 145 GB, but S-GAME asks for 300 GB free on an SSD during pre-load and unlock because the pre-load files and the final files coexist until the unlock completes. The PS5 version is 134.9 GB.

Does the Digital Deluxe edition give early access?

No. Neither pre-loading nor the Deluxe edition unlocks the game early; everyone starts at the same global unlock time.

Is Phantom Blade Zero a souls-like?

The director has said repeatedly that it is not. It is a fast, combo-driven action RPG with an adjustable difficulty (three tiers in the first run), where mastery comes from weapon switching and parry timing rather than attrition. Some outlets still file it under souls-like because of its boss focus.

Does Phantom Blade Zero have co-op or multiplayer?

Not at launch. Steam lists the game as single-player only, and the launch reviews describe no co-op mode. A 2023 community Q&A mentioned the team was considering an online mode for the endgame, which is why some database sites still list two-player co-op; nothing of the kind has shipped.

Sources (2)
Is it open world?

No. The world is a set of interconnected, hand-crafted regions — previews count eight — explored with deliberately vague hand-painted ink-wash maps that give rough direction rather than markers.

Is it on Xbox, Switch 2 or Game Pass?

No. Phantom Blade Zero launches on PlayStation 5 (PS5 Pro enhanced) and PC via Steam and Epic (plus WeGame and TapTap in China). No Xbox, Switch 2 or Game Pass version has been announced, and a twelve-month PS5 console exclusivity has been reported.

Sources (3)
Is there a physical edition?

Launch is digital only. A physical PS5 release with three editions has been announced for 2027.

How long is Phantom Blade Zero?

Reviewers report roughly 25–30 hours for the main story and 40–50 hours with side content; the producer quoted 20–25 and 30–35 hours. Fifty-plus bosses and eight endings push completion well past that. Our own chapter timings follow after launch.

Sources (3)
How many weapons are there?

Thirty main weapons (Blades) and twenty-five Phantom Edges (sub-weapons). You carry two of each at a time and can swap mid-combo. The weapon database lists each one with how to get it.

Sources (2)
How many bosses are there?

More than fifty, including optional ones. A per-region boss list is being compiled from launch day.

Sources (1)
How many endings does it have?

Eight. They branch from the outcomes of side quests accumulated across the story rather than one final choice; skipping side content reportedly leads to the bad ending. The Endings page tracks which you have seen and will carry spoiler-light conditions as they are verified.

Sources (2)
What difficulty settings are there?

Three selectable tiers in the first run — the easiest is story-friendly and still allows every trophy — plus a New Game+ only challenge mode called Sixty-Six Days with a separate save and limited deaths. English names seen in reviews are Wayfarer, Pathbreaker and Hellwalker; the Difficulty guide has the full table and the other names floating around.

Sources (3)
Is there a time limit? What are the 66 days?

There is no real-time clock. The 66 days are the story's premise — the protagonist, Soul, has 66 days to live — not a countdown you play against. Separately, Sixty-Six Days is the name of the New Game+ challenge mode that limits how many times you can die.

Sources (2)
Is there a New Game Plus?

Yes. Finishing the game unlocks New Game+, which carries over weapons, Phantom Edges, accessories and growth resources — around ten late-game weapons become usable from the start — and the Sixty-Six Days mode, which uses a separate save. The director says there is no NG+-exclusive content and no NG+ trophies.

What happens when you die?

Nothing is lost — no currency, no experience. Multi-phase bosses restart from the phase you reached, because the game saves after each phase.

Sources (2)
Do enemies respawn? Can you grind?

Defeated enemies stay dead, even after resting at a bell; only crossing into a different region brings them back. Currency and upgrade materials are therefore finite in a run, which is why you cannot max every weapon in one playthrough.

Sources (3)
Does the PC version use Denuvo?

Yes. The Steam store page lists Denuvo Anti-Tamper as third-party DRM.

Sources (2)
Does it run on Steam Deck?

It launches without a Valve Deck rating, and reviewers who tried it advise against it for now: under 30 fps even on the lowest settings, 23–27 fps in the Crimson Forest with dips to around 10, and two to two-and-a-half hours of battery. S-GAME has said it intends to optimise for the Deck. Our settings tests follow on launch day.

Sources (2)
Which languages does it support? Is there Hungarian?

Fifteen languages: English and Simplified Chinese with full voice acting, plus French, German, Spanish (Spain and Latin America), Russian, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Korean, Italian, Thai and Vietnamese text. There is no Hungarian text or audio.

Sources (2)
Is there character creation?

No. You play a fixed protagonist, Soul; customisation comes from weapons, Phantom Edges, talents and outfits rather than a character creator.

Sources (1)
How are the reviews?

Strong. At the 26 October embargo lift the PC version sat at 88 on Metacritic (PS5: 86) and 91 on OpenCritic, with praise concentrated on the combat and the lowest scores aimed at the story.

Sources (2)
How much does it cost?

$59.99 standard and $69.99 Digital Deluxe on the US PlayStation Store; $59.99 on Steam in the US and €59.99 in eurozone-priced regions such as Hungary. The Hungarian PlayStation Store lists 25 990 Ft and 29 990 Ft.
